That means the seal strip on those shingles let go and the wind finished the job. Wind gets under the leading edge of a shingle, breaks its bond, and either creases it, tears it loose entirely, or leaves it flapping and no longer sealed. A creased shingle will not reseal on its own, and it will leak in the next rain even if it looks mostly intact from the ground. The number of affected shingles and whether the seal has failed in a small area or across the whole roof determines whether this is a quick patch or points to something bigger.
Warning signs to watch for
Shingles or pieces in the yard or gutters
This is the clearest sign wind has torn shingles loose. It's worth checking the roof even if you only find one or two pieces, because more may be lifted but not yet gone.
Creased or curled shingle edges
A creased shingle has lost its seal and won't lie flat again, which means it's letting water underneath even without a visible tear. These need to be replaced rather than pressed back down.
Bald patches with granules in the gutters
Granule loss can be wind and age related or a sign of hail impact. Either way, exposed asphalt ages fast in the sun and shortens the life of that section of roof.
Damaged or missing ridge cap shingles
The ridge takes the most direct wind of any part of the roof, so ridge cap shingles are often the first to lift or crack. A damaged ridge is an easy entry point for water if it's not repaired.

If the seal failure turns out to be widespread across several slopes, we'll tell you that plainly and walk through what a full section replacement or re-roof would involve instead.
