Why the timing matters after a storm
Insurance policies have a window to report storm damage, and hail bruising is easiest to document in the first few weeks before weather wears it in. An inspection now costs nothing and gives you dated photos either way.
Griffintegrity Roof & Remod repairs wind damage for homes across Coweta County and the south side of metro Atlanta, including Newnan, Peachtree City, Fairburn, and Tyrone. Wind gets under the leading edge of a shingle, breaks the factory seal, and either creases it or tears it off completely, and creased shingles never reseal on their own. We've been doing this work for 10 years and carry the Owens Corning Preferred Contractor credential, so replacement shingles go back on matched to the manufacturer's install standards.

Did last night's wind leave your roof looking different from the street?
A missing shingle or a patch that looks slightly off color is the obvious tell, but a lot of wind damage is quieter than that. Shingles that got lifted and dropped back down can look normal from the ground while the seal underneath is broken, and a broken seal means the next storm finishes the job. Checking the roof after any significant wind event, even without visible damage, catches the problem while it's still a simple repair.
Warning signs to watch for
Shingles missing entirely
A bare patch of exposed decking or underlayment is the clearest sign wind tore a shingle off completely. That spot is unprotected until it's repaired.
Creased shingles along the roof edge or ridge
Wind lifts a shingle, folds it, and drops it back down creased. A crease breaks the shingle's seal permanently, so it will not lie flat or reseal on its own even after the wind stops.
Shingles that lift under a light push
If a shingle moves or flaps when you press on it near the edge, the seal strip has already let go even though the shingle is still in place. That's damage the next storm will finish.
Debris or granules scattered near the base of the house
Torn-off shingle pieces and granules on the ground or in the landscaping after a windstorm usually mean the roof lost more material than what's visible from where you're standing.
What is causing the problem
Broken seal strips along the shingle edges
Every shingle relies on a factory seal strip that bonds to the one below it. Strong, sustained wind breaks that bond starting at the most exposed edges and corners of the roof.
Shingles installed or aged past their flexibility
Older shingles that have already started to dry out crease and tear more easily in wind than shingles still in their flexible years.
Ridge cap damage
The ridge cap takes the most direct wind load on the whole roof, and once a few caps lift or crack, the ridge line underneath is exposed on the next storm.
Seal failure spread across most of the roof
When lifted or creased shingles show up across every slope instead of one exposed corner, patching each one isn't a lasting fix and a full re-roof is usually the more practical call.
What to expect during the visit
We walk every slope of the roof and lift-test shingles along the edges, corners, and ridge, since those are where wind damage starts. We count every creased, torn, or missing shingle and check the condition of the ridge cap as we go. Everything gets photographed, which matters if the damage is widespread enough to be a claim. From there we either repair the affected shingles directly or, if the seal failure is spread across the whole roof, recommend replacement and walk you through what that looks like.
Related services you may need
Wind and hail frequently show up in the same storm, so a wind inspection often turns up hail bruising worth checking too. If the roof needs more than a patch, or gutters took damage from falling debris, those get handled as part of the same visit.
The cost of waiting
A creased shingle or a bare patch of exposed decking doesn't leak the first dry week after the storm, it leaks the next time rain comes in sideways. By then water has often worked past the underlayment and into the decking, turning a shingle repair into a decking repair with interior damage on top of it. Insurance policies also have windows for filing wind claims, so a delay can turn a covered repair into one you pay for yourself.
How do I know if my roof has wind damage?
The most reliable way is to have someone check the edges, corners, and ridge, since that's where wind damage starts and it's not always visible from the ground. We look for missing, creased, or lifted shingles and check whether the seal has failed nearby.
Will a few missing shingles need a full roof replacement?
Not necessarily. Isolated missing or creased shingles are usually a straightforward repair, and it's only when the seal failure has spread across most of the roof that replacement becomes the more practical option.
How much does wind damage roof repair cost?
It depends on how many shingles were affected and whether the ridge cap or decking underneath was involved. Wind damage is frequently covered by insurance, which is why documenting everything during the inspection matters.
